Nan Goldin

Artist: Nan Goldin
Date: 1999
Title: Joanna Lauging, Hotel Paris

I really find Goldin's raw quality to her photographs appealing. She doesn't shy away from anything. She doesn't glamorize anything. Her photographs are all raw representations of her experiences and the people she's met along the way. At least, that's how I look at them. I tend to like artists like this who try and eliminate society's filter. Showing these individuals with what has potentially isolated them from society almost elevates them as stronger beings, portraying them as the "elite."

  1. I like this photo by how natural and candid it is. I also like how they kept the ashes on the cigarette.

  2. Well said. The rawness of the images in combination with her ability to capture an energy and essence of her subjects makes her photos incredibly intimate and emotional.

American Suburb X has a wonderful and heartbreaking piece about her series on Cookie Mueller (http://www.americansuburbx.com/2012/04/theory-nan-goldin-on-cookie-mueller.html). It provides interesting insights into Goldin's work.

  3. i cannot help but also note how the color in this photo works! notice how that trim on the wall - very well could be gold, but here (because of the lighting) is rendered green, and so is the cast on her face. These things, along with her crazy look, and cigarette - just add so much to the image.

    thanks. good article Unknown.
