Gerhard Richter

Artist: Gerhard Richter
Date: March 15 2003
Title: Untitled

I thoroughly enjoy Gerhard Richter's work, especially his paintings over the family photos. To me family is chaotic, wild and fun. Taking these family photos and adding a layer of confusion and chaos fits along perfectly to me. I enjoy the paint over the other types of photographs as well but to me the ones over family type things adds to the hidden meaning of this splattered paint.

  1. I totally agree that his work is crazy, fun, and energetic to look at. Painting over photographs gives the photograph more feel and color. To me, the paint symbolizes something that the artist is trying to make mysterious or hidden and makes the viewer wander what is behind the paint.

  2. I agree with the idea of how the paint is used to add characteristics to the family photograph. MAybe he added paint to show the messiness of children. many different thoughts of why paint is used but to me it makes me think that the children are wild, and messy.

  4. One really valuable thing this work does (i think) is make us question color relationships - and media. How does the blueness in the photograph, mix or become unbalanced with the purple paint. How does the texture of the paint make the viewer feel pleasure or a lack of balance in contrast to the photograph.

I like the different reasons you all came up with for the symbolism of the paint over family photographs too - all good ideas!

    Thanks!
